Technical representative and company spokesperson: World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), SGML Open, International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Working Group 6, Web Accessibility Initiative, Davenport Group, Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), Digital Libraries Initiative (DLI), International World Wide Web Conference Committee, Yuri Rubinsky Insight Foundation, and the International Committee for Accessible Document Design (ICADD).

Instrumental in the development of HTML and CSS specifications, SGML Open fragment specification, Digital Libraries Initiative mathematics representation specification, promotion of SGML and XML, and formation of the Web Accessibility Initiative. Speaker, invited speaker, keynote speaker, panelist and session chair at Seybold, WWW, SGML, IEEE, Documation, and 1-ISP conferences.

Product Manager (August 1995 - December 1995)

Coordinated product release of HoTMetaL PRO 2.0, and SoftQuad Panorama PRO 1.5. Developed initial concept for SoftQuad HoTMetaL intranet Publisher (H.i.P.). Managed relationships with third-party technology vendors. Developed "Products" section of prospectus for SoftQuad’s initial public offering on NASDAQ in 1995.

Documentation Specialist (March 1986 - March 1991)

Managed technical documentation and work with development teams to design and implement publishing systems. Wrote, designed, typeset and produced several award-winning technical manuals. Served as a consultant to R&D teams: as a member of the design team for SoftQuad Publishing Software; providing competitive analysis; resident expert on indexing, cross-referencing and hypertext.

Project Manager January 1990 - March 1991

Responsible for managing the development of customized production-publishing systems for the U.S. Department of Defense CALS initiative. Performed project requirements analysis; developed formal specifications for several document types, including SGML DTDs and output format specifications; managed production schedules and coordinated development teams; designed mechanism for conversion of SGML documents to native publishing systems.

Technical Services Manager (March 1986 - December 1989)

Managed the activities of technical staff responsible for hot-line support, training, demo packages for presentations, sales database creation and maintenance, manufacture and distribution of software products, and participation at trade shows.


SCO Canada/HCR Corporation

Technical Publications Architect (March 1991 - July 1995)

Member of company’s technical strategy team. Helped design and develop the world’s first HTML-based context-sensitive help and online documentation system in 1993 and ‘94. Member of small teams responsible for design of documentation products, and design and implementation of publishing system. Represent company on various technical committees related to information architecture, document interchange, print publishing, hypertext, internationalization, SGML and HTML. Speaker at SCO Forum ’93 and session chair at SCO Forum ’94. Speaker at Seybold ’95.

Technical Publications Manager (March 1991 - March 1994)

Member of technical publications and engineering management teams. Responsible for a local staff of technical writers and typesetters, producing a five thousand page set of technical manuals for SCO’s UNIX development system. Project management responsibility for writers and typesetters in California and England. Created SCO Canada’s Technical Publications department. Incurred negligible recruitment costs over a three year period. Introduced automated production tools and techniques which significantly improved quality, and reduced costs by eliminating manual intervention. Subject matter included C and C++ compilers, graphical debuggers, networking and windowing system libraries, software packaging utilities, and system administration utilities.

Technical Writer (July 1985 - February 1986)

Co-produced complete documentation set for an emerging 4GL business software system, including user manuals, technical product description, and the system’s technical specification. Delivered product documentation in advance of actual software implementation. Managed company’s conversion to laser-printer production of product documentation and coordinated development of a customized document formatting package on the UNIX operating system. Co-produced a procedures manual for use by the technical publications group. Implemented scripted demonstrations for use at trade shows.

Technical Writer (February 1982 - January 1983)

Produced documentation for Sentrol’s distributed process control systems, including user’s manuals and field engineer’s reference manual.


J&J Development Systems Ltd.

Production Coordinator/Supervisor (June 1980 - September 1981)

Responsible for scheduling and supervision of quality control activities in a start-up printed circuit board manufacturing plant. Co-produced facility design, and supervised initial setup of facility. Designed and implemented a manual-write production scheduling system, and a contract bidding program.

Production Coordinator (July 1978 - May 1980)

Responsible for production and scheduling of a line of industrial radio and television equipment. Designed a manual-write production scheduling system for line of Studio-Transmitter Links.


Circon Corporation

Writer/Exhibit Coordinator (January 1977 - June 1988)

Co-produced user manuals for complete line of medical video systems. Produced user manuals for large-scale I.C. micro-video inspection and measurement systems. Coordinated conference activities.



Education

Largely self-taught or trained on-the-job. Read and absorb large volumes of printed material fairly quickly. Formal training in electronics, networking, programming, writing, and graphic arts.

Graduated Electronics Technician: Computers program with honors. Course of study included data communications, technical communications, rudiments of computer application design and implementation, programming, digital circuit analysis, microprocessors and networking,.
